From the surrounding context (PNG handler, color library, color sphere), "matrix" could reasonably mean a 2D grid abstraction — a row × column table of cells. That would fit naturally as the underlying data structure for PNG pixel grids and QR bit matrices, with the value type left open (colors, bits, anything).
